Scarinci, Giordano lift Jaspers in Battle of the Bronx

Freshman pitcher Michael Scarinci of Nanuet and senior Mike Giordano of Bedford turned in key relief efforts as the Manhattan College baseball team defeated Bronx rival Fordham University, 6-4, at Houlihan Park at Jack Coffey Field on the Rams’ campus.

Scarinci, who was graduated from Pearl River HS, got the final out of the sixth inning stranding a runner on third base, while Giordano, a Fox Lane HS alum, pitched an efficient eighth inning in his first appearance since March 24 after recovering from an injury.

Manhattan junior centerfielder Anthony Vega of Patchogue scored Joe Rock of Carmel with a bunt single in the fifth inning to break a scoreless battle.

Zach Small of Pelham Manor pitched one and a third innings in relief for the Rams, allowing no runs.

Manhattan (21-23) hopes to carry its momentum into the weekend when it returns to MAAC action at Fairfield University (20-23). The Jaspers will begin the three game set on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.

Fordham (19-29) opens a three-game series at home against the University of Rhode Island (26-19) on Friday at 7 p.m. The teams meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m., and on Sunday at noon.

Mortarboard musings

The Jaspers closed out a 5-9 campaign with a 12-4 loss to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Siena at Gaelic Park in Riverdale. Freshman outfielder/catcher Ryan O’Rourke, a former two-sport standout at Tappan Zee HS, has played in nine games, starting four, since being elevated to the varsity. The Pride (20-14, 12-7) return to action on Saturday at Wheaton College to meet third-seeded Babson. The winner will challenge top-seeded Wheaton in the championship round later that afternoon.
  • Five Manhattanville baseball players received awards when the Freedom Conference announced their awards for this season. Senior Dan Fiorito was named the Conference’s Player of the Year and Michael Lyon was named the Conference’s Rookie of the Year.
