Pelham Daily Sports Digest: Pelican Hockey Ties Suffern 1-1

The Top Spot:

Pelham and Suffern skated to a 1-1 tie last night at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon.

Colin Reilly gave the Pelicans the early lead as he found the back of the net just five minutes into the game. Josh Borofsky led the defense as the goalie had 29 saves during the contest.

Suffern’s Willie Sanchez knotted the game up with seconds left in regulation after Suffern goaltender Tyler Stark was pulled to improve the team’s offense. Stark had 18 saves in the tie.

Suffern is now 14-2-2 and Pelham ended the game at 11-5-1.

In boys basketball, Lincoln will head to Pelham at 4:15 p.m.

In girls basketball, Lincoln will host Pelham at 4:30 p.m.

Bonnies looking unbeatable

Junior Alaina Walker of Pomona scored 14 points, and senior Jessica Jenkins of Marion, OH, hit eight 3-pointers en route to a game-high 32 points as the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team (22-2, 9-0 Atlantic 10) defeated a shorthanded George Washington club, 80-69, to win its record-tying 11th straight game and remain alone atop the A-10 standings.

The Bonnies took advantage of a GW squad (10-12, 3-5 A-10) which dressed just six players due to injuries.

The 11 consecutive victories tie the program record with the 2009-10 team which commenced its campaign at 11-0. It also evens coach Jim Crowley’s career record (176-176) for the first time in his 12-year tenure on the SBU sideline.

The 80 points are a season high for Bonaventure as the Bonnies also shot a season-best 52.8 percent from the floor.

Walker, a graduate of Albertus Magnus, posted her first double-figure scoring since the conference opener – while redshirt senior Armelia Horton of Harlem had a career-best eight assists – three more than any St. Bonaventure player has issued this year. Walker's point total is the most in her career against an A-10 opponent.

The Bonnies return to action today on the road against Massachusetts. The game is the first of a doubleheader as they will face the Minutemen at 5 p.m. prior to the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

Chargers come from behind

Senior Michael Calzonetti of Gloucester, NJ, had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Dominican College men’s basketball team rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to overtake University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA.

Sophomore Khaleev Ginyard of Brentwood led all scorers and three Chargers in double figures with 19 points while guard Leon Porter of Laurel, MD, added 10 points and six assists.

Center Cory Quimby of Otisville had a team-high 12 rebounds, and seven points, while freshman guard A.J. Burton of New Rochelle come off the bench to collect nine rebounds.

Dominican--which improved to 13-7 overall and 6-6 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference--returns to action Thursday (Feb. 9) when its hosts CACC North Division rival Nyack College. Game time is 8 p.m. on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg.   

Lady Spartans stay on track

Bianca Kowgios of Yonkers scored a career-high 27 points to lead the St. Thomas Aquinas College women’s basketball team to a 77-65 victory over visiting Molloy College.

Ashley Motrechuk of Staten Island added16 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Spartans, who have won two straight and four of five to improve to 11-10 overall, 6-5 in the East Coast Conference. Molloy saw its modest two-game win streak snapped as the Lions suffered their eighth loss in their last 11, falling to 9-12, 5-6.

Kowgios, an alum of Maria Regina HS in Hartsdale, set the tone early, recording seven points in the first 6:24 and staking STAC to an 11-4 lead. The Lady Spartans extended their margin to as much as eight at 29-21 with just 3:09 remaining in the half, but Molloy closed with a 9-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 31-30 at the break.

The Lady Spartans head into the home stretch with a big road contest tonight at 5 p.m. at conference-leading Dowling College. The game will be aired along with the following men’s contest as part of the conference’s Featured Double-Header series and can be accessed at www.eccsports.org. They return to Aquinas Hall in Sparkill to host LIU-Post on Saturday, with double-header action starting at 1 p.m.

Golden Bears caged

Junior guard Alex Berthiaume poured in 30 points to lead the Springfield men’s basketball team to an 85-70 non-conference victory over visiting Western New England University in a battle of city rivals at Blake Arena in Springfield, MA.
Western New England (7-14) enjoyed a four-point lead until the Pride used a 12-5 run in the last 4:36 to take a 39-36 advantage at the break, and then pull steadily away down the stretch,

Dennis Rinaldi of Harrison played 22 minutes for the Golden Bears, contributing four points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Jason Kulik of Rye Brook played three minutes, and Adam Mayer of Peekskill saw only one minute of action.

WNEU looks to rebound at home tonight when it hosts Curry College (10-11) of Milton, MA, at 5:30 p.m., and then visits Eastern Nazarene (3-18) in Quincy, MA, on Saturday at 3 p.m.
