Pelham Daily Sports Digest: Pelicans Split Friday Night with Ardsley

The Pelham varsity basketball teams started the off with Friday night games against Ardsley.

First the girls faced off at Ardsley, and Pelham came up short as the Lady Pelicans fell by 11 despite having three players reach double figures.

The boys game took place at Pelham and the home court advantaged proved to be the difference as the Pelicans came away from the defensive minded game with a one point victory in overtime.

Yesterday’s Results:

Sport: Boys Basketball (Friday)

Game: Pelham vs. Ardsley

Score: Pelham Won 49-48 (OT)

Highlights: Pelham only scored three points in overtime but it was enough to get the job done on Friday. Pat Condy led the Pelicans with 11 points and Zack Rollins added 10 in the win. Gabe Kardish led all scorers with 15 points in the loss and Jack Liebersohn added 12.

 

Sport: Girls Basketball (Friday)

Game: Pelham vs. Ardsley

Score: Ardsley Won 54-43

Highlights: Ardsley was led by Casey Foley’s 22 points and Toni Pilla added 17 in the win. Christina Elezaj led the Pelicans with 16 and Katie Moskowitz and Vittoria Volpe each added ten in the loss.

 

Today’s Schedule:

In boys basketball, Pelham will head to Sleepy Hollow at 4:45 p.m.

In girls basketball, Pelham will host Sleepy Hollow at 4:45 p.m.

 

College Sports Notebook:

Bearcats snap slide, point to Red Storm

Sean Kilpatrick of White Plains, who leads the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team with 15.4 points per game, poured in 16 as the Bearcats pulled away from DePaul to post a 74-66 Big East Conference win at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati.

Dion Dixon of Chicago also had 16 points for the Bearcats (16-7, 6-4), who ended a three-game losing streak before meeting St. John’s (10-13, 4-7) at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

Mistake-prone DePaul committed 18 turnovers, helping Cincinnati enjoy a 22-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Bearcats, the Big East leaders in 3-point field goals going into the game, missed their first eight before Kilpatrick, who also had four assists, connected with seven seconds left in the first half to cut DePaul's halftime lead to 38-36. They went 3-of -15 on 3-pointers for the game.

           

Mavericks succeed on alumni day

Senior forward Talia Beaulieu of Waldorf, MD, hit the game-winning shot with just two seconds remaining as the Mercy College women’s basketball team beat NYIT, 75-74, in Dobbs Ferry to notch its second East Coast Conference (ECC) victory of the season.

The Mavericks (2-18, 2-9 ECC) hope to build up some steam when they host Dominican College (9-10, 9-4) tonight at 5:30 p.m.

Aysha Williams of New Rochelle had nine points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists in 22 minutes against NYIT, while Jessica Biggs of Nanuet saw only nine minutes of action, contributing two steals and a defensive rebound.

 

Nyack rallies, falls short

Four Warriors posted double figures in scoring as the Nyack College men’s basketball team put up a valiant effort before bowing to Chestnut Hill College, 81-76, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest in Philadelphia, PA.

Freshman guard Chris Hampton of Brooklyn led the way for Nyack with 21 points, a team-high seven assists and a team-high six rebounds.         

Sophomore Jose Pena-Benjamin of Rahway, NJ, scored 18 points with a team-high three steals, while freshman Khalid Samuels of Mount Vernon followed his career high in scoring against Bloomfield with a 17-point performance.

Senior forward Lafayette Curtis of Staten Island had 13 points and two blocked shots in the losing effort.

Nyack goes back to the well tonight in Wilmington, DE, to battle Goldey-Beacom College (11-8) at 7 p.m.

 

Bears are golden

Junior guard Damon Alston of New Britain, CT, scored a career high 21 points, and sophomore center Dennis Rinaldi of Harrison had 10  to lead the Western New England men’s basketball team to an 83-74 victory over Endicott in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest at Beverly, MA.
This was the highest scoring total of the season for Western New England, which had four players in double figures and ended a three-game skid while raising its record to 7-13 overall and 4-10 in the conference.

Endicott (12-8, 7-6 CCC) led 41-36 at halftime and held an eight-point advantage at 58-50 before the Golden Bears turned it around.

WNU hosts Springfield College (13-6) tonight at 7 p.m.
