PMHS Pelicans Fly To Victory Against The White Plains Tigers

Teams clash at Glover Field in Pelham for an early season contest.

The Pelham Memorial High School boys Varsity lacrosse team triumphed over the White Plains on Wednesday with a score of 8 to 6.

Glover field was a hotbed of athletic contest Wednesday afternoon. As the beautiful mid-day sun began to fade to dark gray, the PMHS Pelicans and the White Plains Tigers took to Glover Field. AC/DC blasted from the loudspeakers as both teams warmed up as the temperature cooled down.

While White Plains dominated the first faceoff, this would be one of the few times that it had the upper hand. Both teams scored quick goals early in the first quarter. However, Pelham’s control of the ball and feisty defensive work kept White Plains from racking up any more scores.

By halftime, Pelham had scored three more goals to White Plains’ one. The third quarter would see the tables turned as Pelham became overzealous with their sticks, as Pelham Coach Steve Magarelli put it, and racked up eight penalties. These man-down situations allowed White Plain to gain the steam it needed to get back into the game.

During the fourth quarter, because of several injured starting players, weak transitions, and numerous unforced errors, White Plains was not able to sustain the momentum it gained during the third quarter, according to White Plains coach Mark Armogida.  At the end of the game, the score was Pelham 8 and White Plains 6.

The top scorer for the Pelicans was midfielder Brian Buckley with three goals. Defensive longstick midfielder Matt Landis had the most ground balls with eight and was a decisive factor in Pelham’s control of the ball. Between the pipes goaltender Mike O’ Connor stopped five one-on-one shots from White Plains attackmen.

Top scorers for White Plains were Michael Trapp and Daniel Broderick who both had two goals each.

This game leaves Pelham with a record of 2-0 and White Plains with a record of 0-1.

The Pelicans will go up against a very strong Bronxville squad this Friday at Glover and White Plains will challenge Eastchester at their home field.
