Young Athletes Shine at Annual Hockey Awards Dinner

The Pelham Youth Hockey Association's 47th annual dinner celebrated their star players and recognized each individual for their hard work on the ice

Though hockey season may have ended, the players had a chance to sit back, recognize their achievements and thank their coaches for their guidance on Thursday night at the 47th annual awards dinner.

The Pelham Youth Hockey Association convened at The Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester for an evening of chicken parmigiana and ice cream sundaes and honoring the team members, coaches and managers for their hard work and commitment on the ice.

“I'm one of the most fortunate coaches, having support from the community, parents and players," remarked Ed Witz, coach of the Varsity ice hockey team that made it to the championship Semi Final game in Utica.

Each player in the Pelham Hockey association was recognized for his achievements, starting at the Clinic level and culminating with the Varsity team. Coaches fawned over their star players and parents and guests applauded for each young athlete.

In a touching moment during the awards ceremony, Varsity player Danny Shea was awarded the Joe Shea award, named after his father who died on September 11. The honor is bestowed to the player who shows great sportsmanship, hard work and acts as a major asset on and off the ice.

Westchester County Legislator Jim Maisano attended the dinner to commend the Varsity team for its success this season and their efforts in supporting the troops in Afghanistan. He also shared his experiences in coaching little league against Witz in the 70s.

“Witz always beat me and it was clear even then that he had a gift for coaching,” recalled Maisano
