Last Chance: The Olympics Come to Pelham, Live Music in New Rochelle

Summer concert series continue in the Queen City on the Sound.

Olympic Themed Screenings and Panel Discussions at the Picture House

The Picture House in Pelham will conclude its  “Faster, Higher, Stronger: The Olympics on Screen” a series on Thursday.

The series, which features various films that examine all that the Olympics represent, began on July 20 and featured panel discussions led by former Olympians, panels with sports writers and historians.

Although a panel discussion that was scheduled today featuring Dave Zirin, sports editor for The Nation, has been cancelled, Thursday’s discussion featuring Shaun Assael, writer for ESPN The Magazine is still scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Assael discussion, which is entitled Steroid Nation and The Olympics, is free and open to the public.

Thursday will also feature a special 8 p.m. screening of  China Heavyweight. Joe Deguardia, chief executive officer of Star Boxing and owner of  Morris Park Boxing Gym, will give a special introduction prior to the start of the film. Tickets cost  $12 at the door and $9 with an advance purchase. Seniors, Students and children pay $10 at the door and $8 with an advance purchase. Members pay an everyday low price of $6.

As part of the Picture House series, Rockwell's American Restaurant, will give a 25 percent discount to anyone who attends a screening on Wednesday. Patrons just need to bring their tickets before or after the movie to claim their tickets.

The Emil Paolucci Summer Sounds Concert Series continues in Hudson Beach Park at the bandshell Wednesday at 7 p.m. with the Andrew Swift Five, performing jazz favorites and original compositions.

The concert series is presented by the New Rochelle Council on the Arts, in partnership with the New Rochelle Dept. of Parks and Recreation, and sponsored by Webster Bank.

On Thursday, the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District Music on the Green concert series continues with Jesters of Jive with Joan Crowe. The concert starts at 7 p.m. on Library Green.

The New York City band is influenced by the jump-jive and swing bands of the 1940s including Count Basie, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and The Dorsey Brothers.
