Summer Reading Program in Full Swing in Pelham

The program ends in August with an ice-cream sundae making event.

Summer reading is a priority at the Pelham Public LIbrary.

Children's Services Librarian Lilly Hecker said that the program is geared for pre-school through the eighth grade.

She said reading during the summer was essential.

"If the children stop reading over the summer, they lose some of their skills," Hecker said, making it more difficult to start up again in school in the fall.

Usually about 200 children participate in the reading program.

And it's not just reading that is encouraged.

Pre-school children can listen to six stories after which they can select a prize.

School-age kids who read three age-appropriate books get to select a prize also.

Hecker said the program ends with a closing event where the children get to make their own ice-cream sundae.

The Pelham Public Library is located at 530 Colonial Ave.
