Hutchinson Elementary School

Hutchinson Elementary School is a K-5 school in the Pelham School District with about 350 students.

It appears aptly named, given its proximity to the Hutchinson River Parkway, but it actually began as The Pelhamville School, which opened in 1866, and is named (like the parkway) after Anne Hutchinson.

Hutchinson was born in England and became a noted female religious thinker in the American colonies. Her radical views on the role of clergy in worship—she believed God connected with individuals outside of church hierarchy—eventually caused her banishment from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

After time in Rhode Island and her husband's death, Hutchinson moved to the Pelham Bay Colony.

The current school structure was built in 1914.

The school touts the curriculum at Hutchinson as one devoted to creative and critical thought. "We will motivate our students to be problem solvers, who can work both independently and collaboratively," the district says on the school's website.

The principal is Carla Tarazi, appointed in 2006.

The school's PTA co-presidents are Ericka Connor and Candice Ripoll.
