The Tradition of Bloomsday

The term “Bloomsday” was coined by friends of the Irish novelist and
poet James Joyce soon after his work Ulysses was published in 1922.
“Bloomsday” refers to June 16, 2004, the day Leopold Bloom’s adventures take
place in Ulysses.  This annual
holiday was first celebrated by Joyce’s publishers in 1929 on the 25th
anniversary of this day in Versailles. On the 50th anniversary,
revelers retraced the Bloom’s route through Dublin and read excerpts from the
novel as a way to commemorate the life, language and literature of Joyce. This
holiday is celebrated around the world with readings, performances, and
re-enactments.
